My understanding here after listening to Dr Bereket explaining of the early days to draft Eritrean constitution – it is clear to that this Eritrean draft was heavily tainted and stained by Mr Isayas. I suppose since most of Dr Bereket’s time and education is/was in the USA it is safe to shout out and “assume” the Eritrean draft was meant to closely shadow and mimic, closely, the structures of the United States Constitution’s creation. That is not so. George Washington did not force or twist any of the delegates arm and furthermore Washington was not forcing anyone to pick and choose how the draft was written. But that is not how Eritrean draft was constructed. According to Dr Bereket that some people informed Dr Bereket to go visit Mr Isayas. While Dr Bereket was attending a meeting some Eritrean government representatives informed Dr Bereket that Mr Isayas was ecpecting him. Nothing wrong with such visit and gesture, but it is that fact one person was driving Eritrean constitution draft and not a group or representative body. Even the very people who were enticing Dr Bereket to go and visit Mr Isayas were all at the mercy of Mr Isayas regarding the drafting of the constitution. Repeatedly, Dr Bereket has clearly stated this very fact that Dr Bereket was coerced by Mr Isayas in another wedsite’s lengthy interview during the drafting. This draft is not valid and could only serve as “Premable” and a living document in my opinion.A new draft has to be made or this current draft needs to be amended and fixed in order to lead Eritrea to another chapter. It needs a revisit and remake. Few notes from Dr Bereket on this interview however to point out:
1. Paraphrasing here according to Dr Bereket
a. Many things have improved in Africa and Dictators are gone –Well, which African village or town is Dr Bereket talking? The wishful Africa that every African dream of? Perhaps you could elaborate on this comment.
2. Was Eritrean constitution approved or not?
a. I believe the Eritrean draft was more like “vote or approve now, amend later” process. This makes the Eritrean constitution draft that it never was implemented and ratified. The draft was shoved through the throats of Eritreans and to save the face as Eritrea was back in the 90’s still in figuring itself out and most Eritreans were soaked in with post Independence.
3.Kudos: Regarding Mr. Isayas’s comment made while visiting Ethiopia that “Eritrean’s lost nothing. In fact, Eritrea has gained rather.” I am in agreement with Dr. Bereket. Bravo! It is a shameful statement and does create another scar in every Eritrean mind but Mr. Isayas made it and it is left now for history. This very pedestrian comment made by Mr. Isayas reverberates and reminds us all the very comment made by the late PM Meles Zenawi while visiting Eritrea right after independence days I believe, “Eritreans, do not keep scratching your wounds.” Very bold and disrespectful.
4.Kudos again: Another excellent comment! Dr. Bereket’s statement regarding Howard’s University.
Build a nation and/or community starts from cleaning once inner system standing the bullies. This is a good enough starting draft but I am in the camp, if there is one, to re-draft with clear independence and representatives in place. “my great concern is whether you have failed but whether you are content with your failure” Lincoln
